Novak Djokovic Cast In 'Expendables 2'

The already impossibly badass cast of "The Expendables 2" got a lot more badass, although in the rather unforeseen way. Instead of tapping a completely new action movie hero to participate the star-studded likes of Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, it is really an athlete who's joining the "Expendables" ranks. Particularly, the presently # 1-ranked tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, is serving up justice round the Bulgaria number of "Expendables 2." According to Deadline, Djokovic's role is only a cameo, but he's already turned up in Bulgaria to shoot his moments inside the film. He won't be moonlighting becoming an awesome assassin either, sadly, but instead playing a imaginary version of themselves. Seems like Barney Ross can be a closet tennis fan! Anyone who follows tennis and Djokovic's career particularly understood it had been only dependent on time just before the fancy player strutted his stuff round the silver screen, however don't think anybody may have predicted it could come by way of an action moviea smaller sized comedy made an appearance much more likely. Either in situation, it's bizarre casting to make certain, but casting we're totally psyched comparable. What can you consider Djokovic joining the "Expendables 2" cast? Early B.O.: 'Breaking Dawn' flying right along

Summit's 'Breaking Dawn' grossed about $13 million Wednesday and is on track to handily win the Thanksgiving weekend.Summit's holdover "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" is on track to handily win the five-day domestic holiday weekend, as very early box office estimates from Wednesday afternoon were tracking in line with expectations.Emphasizing the difficulty of predicting a five-day frame based on such early results, B.O. watchers estimate that the vampire pic will generate about $13 million in Wednesday grosses, followed by a weekend take in the high $50 million to low $60 million range through Sunday. In 2009, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" launched during the same play period and earned $14 million the day before Thanksgiving, with a five-day second week total of $66 million. That's a fair comparison for "Breaking Dawn," but a more competitive frame this year and a more sluggish market could mean a slightly diminished result.Disney's "The Muppets" will likely follow with grosses in the mid-$40 million range for the Thanksgiving break, also in line with tracking. Paramount's "Hugo" is looking to earn $10 million to $12 million for the week, putting it in a similar range with DreamWorks Animation's "Puss in Boots," which might perform a hair more modestly.B.O. observers estimate that Warner Bros.' "Happy Feet Two" will earn around $3.5 million Wednesday and $19 million to $21 million for the five-day break -- similar numbers to projections for Sony's "Arthur Christmas." How to Film a Video Audition

You're not expected to shoot a professional-quality video, but do make sure it's good enough that you can be seen and heard clearly throughout before you send it.Natural light is sufficient. But be sure to face your light source so you are not lost in the contrast.Test your microphone and ensure there isn't too much background noise, so you remain audible throughout the audition.Frame your shot so that your face is clearly and frontally visible in a medium close-up (the top of the frame should be slightly above your head and the bottom of the frame just below your shoulders). In other words: Your face should be your most visible part.Keep your camera as still as possible unless there's a good reason to move it about. Use a tripod.Unless you choose to film yourself on location, use a plain background if you can.Avoid filming other people. Unless you're doing a monologue, have someone read with you, but don't film the other person. "They should be standing right next to the camera, and read your lines directly to them," advises casting director Marci Liroff. "Many times I see the actor is reading with their eye line so far off, it doesn't connect with the viewer." Avoid fancy montages. This is more likely to make the casting director think you can't do an entire scene in one take.If you're filming with an iPhone, be sure to hold it in landscape mode (horizontally, with the lens toward the top). Otherwise your video will either be very narrow or sideways when it's viewed (even though you won't notice this on your iPhone, since it automatically rotates the video). If you're using a webcam, use your camera's software to increase the video frame rate to the maximum; otherwise your video will likely be choppy. This list, based on the feedback of numerous casting directors, is provided courtesy of the website Let It Cast.

Thesps seize career reins

'Another Happy Day''Bridesmaids''Enlightened''Higher Ground''We Need to Talk About Kevin'"Every year around awards season there's talk of how many great roles there are for women," says Vera Farmiga, the director-star of "Higher Ground." "But there's really this dearth of roles out there for women." "Higher Ground" -- based on Carolyn S. Briggs' memoir "This Dark World," is about a born-again Christian who questions her faith while attempting to find her own voice. Farmiga believed so strongly in the project that when financing fell through and moving forward meant she would have to step behind the camera for the first time, she made the plunge -- this despite being three months pregnant and the growing physical discomfort she endured during the shoot. Casting her son Fynn in a cameo and kid sister Taissa Farmiga as her younger self helped turn the film into a family affair (and also kept the budget down). Plus husband-producer Renn Hawkey provided added moral support. "I think the answer is for women to be bold and make the projects that have these wonderful, layered roles in them," says Farmiga, who grew up in a Ukrainian Catholic household. "Bold" is the key word here, since for many of the industry's most discerning actresses, landing complex, challenging parts that resonate personally means that passivity is out of the question; and taking ownership of a project is key. For Kristen Wiig, finding a way to depict the real ups and downs in female friendships was a motivator when she co-wrote "Bridesmaids" with friend Annie Mumolo. "Annie (Mumolo) had just been to a lot of weddings when we started writing 'Bridesmaids' and I think we had both seen how going to weddings or being a bridesmaid can make you feel like everyone is getting it together and moving on when maybe you're not doing that," says Wiig. "We were writing about the friendships women have and how they change when those events happen." Ellen Barkin was deeply moved by Sam Levinson's script for "Another Happy Day," a story that contains multiple powerful female roles for women that exist across different generations. She also knew that since Levinson was a first-time director-writer, her veteran industry cred could help the project get made. It was at that point she decided to don multiple hats as producer and actress, helping persuade Ellen Burstyn, Demi Moore and Kate Bosworth to sign on as well. "I had to learn a whole new skill set but I felt so accomplished afterwards because you see everything Sam (Levinson) wrote up there on the screen," says Barkin. "The great part of it was that Sam didn't understand why it might be a problem to have a story where most of the great roles are for women over 45, because he just wanted to tell the story of these characters." Knocking down barriers based on age or appearance also appealed to Laura Dern when she co-created "Enlightened," an HBO series about a middle-age woman who experiences a spiritual awakening after a painful phase in her life. Even the posters for the show -- which feature an unhinged Dern, with tear streaks of thick, black mascara running down her face -- break from the conventional way women's images are used to sell a project. "You can see the smile lines in my face," laughs Dern. "That's important because this character should be shown as she is, in her 40s, in this state of rage about some of the things that have happened to her, being impossible and trying influence social change." Tilda Swinton, who is no stranger to the production process, was pulled into deeper involvement with "We Need to Talk About Kevin" as an executive producer. The story examines the grief of the mother of a teen boy who goes on a killing spree as she wrestles with feelings of responsibility for his actions. "In the book Lionel Shriver was looking under a corner of society's linoleum that maybe hadn't been pried up before: the taboo subject on the non-inevitable maternal instinct," says Swinton. "I had been all too aware when my own twins were born that I was lucky to love them so much and to be bouncing about in this love." For actresses like Swinton and Farmiga, this deeper involvement, and the requisite passion that goes into it, requires sacrifice. But the extra toil adds to the satisfaction. "When you direct it's two years out of your life," says Farmiga, "but if you're able to do this kind of deeply satisfying work then it's all worth it."Award Season Focus: The WomenThesps seize career reins | Brains and brawn fuel nouveau action heroines | Longtime collaborators help dress the parts | Startling discoveries Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Tower Heist

'Tower Heist'A Universal Pictures release given Imagine Entertainment in colaboration with Relativity Media from the John Grazer production. Produced by Grazer, Eddie Murphy, Kim Roth. Executive producers, Bill Carraro, Karen Kehela Sherwood. Directed by Brett Ratner. Script, Ted Griffin, Rob Nathanson story, Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, Griffin.Josh Kovaks - Ben Stiller Slide - Eddie Murphy Charlie - Casey Affleck Arthur Shaw - Alan Alda Mr. Fitzhugh - Matthew Broderick Lester - Stephen McKinley Henderson Mr. Simon - Judd Hirsh Special Agent Claire Denham - Tea Leoni Enrique Dev'Reaux - Michael Pena Odessa - Gabourey Sidibe Miss Iovenko - Nina AriandaFurther evidence the significant-class is maintenance its pitchforks to storm Wall Street's castle, "Tower Heist" provides a vintage-fashioned comedy caper through which employees in the tony residential high-rise intend to steal back the millions embezzled with the Bernie Madoff-style body body fat cat dwelling within the building's penthouse. Nevertheless the large-budget pic goes wonky to be able to the lending company, due to its lackluster pacing and shortage in the qualities that typically earn stars Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy their earnings -- namely, laughs. Still, their participation should help safeguard Universal's investment, making sure decent returns to the holidays. In the heist movie, the a shorter time allotted to create the higher. But helmer Brett Ratner, whose unapologetically broad yet super-clever entertainments have formerly proven an passionate sense of what auds want, rather draws the setup. Smitten while using building (Trump Tower, but never recognized consequently), he deliberately determines all the figures, from smug billionaire Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda, perfectly cast) to dutiful building manager Josh Kovaks (Stiller), who admires Shaw and takes his job incredibly seriously -- until he finds out the Tower's top-floor tenant pocketed the staff's retirement savings. The script, credited to five authors, with persistence waits for disillusion to sink in, trickling lower using the building which is personnel, together with a not aware expectant-father concierge (Casey Affleck), a bankrupt investor (Matthew Broderick) together with a devastated old doorman (Stephen McKinley Henderson) who tries to step before a subway train when he finds out what increased being of his amount of cash. The film also provides an initial-day-on-the-job bellhop (Michael Pena), whose arrival allows for just about any remedial tour in the Tower's security methods, which appear complicated do not really impact the heist at all. For your first 40 minutes roughly, the pic plays as being a dull blue-collar drama populated entirely by stereotypes, none more crazy than Murphy, who appears on Josh's way both to and from work, wearing a do-rag and shouting at his girlfriend in the pub -- a welcome return to the comic's irreverent, eighties-era persona. Sadly, Murphy, who apparently hatched the project becoming an all-black reaction to the "Ocean's Eleven" series, isn't inside the movie much. When his idea showed up in the screen, it had been rethought a lot that Murphy now finds themselves really the only black character inside the initial crew, enlisted because "he's been arrested lots of occasions." The gang later recruits a Jamaican safe-cracking maid carried out by "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe, who gives Murphy an chance to squirm under her sexual advances (amusing) and fight body body fat jokes (less). Once the wheels finally start to turn on Josh's plan to steal a refund Shaw embezzled, "Tower Heist" builds up some much-needed momentum. Ratner finds themselves on firmer ground such familiar genre territory, getting formerly done his appropiate product on little-seen heist movie "Following a Sunset," which recognized the only real factor more entertaining than really nabbing a multimillion-dollar prize is searching to find a way from it. "Tower Heist" stays the comfort of the running time monitoring the crew simply because they make an effort to infiltrate Shaw's penthouse, locate his hidden millions and, when that fails, make offered through the valued 1963 Ferrari he keeps parked within the living room. Nevertheless the effects get short shrift -- a unique choice, after you have introduced Tea Leoni just like a encouraging FBI agent who confirms to day Josh the Saturday following a heist is planned. The resolution feels rushed, especially as concerns Stiller's character the actor, so excellent at playing annoyed, might have been better used trying to thwart the heist from the inside, rather than leading it. A subplot through which Josh and Shaw play computer chess signifies there's a battle-of-the-wits aspect for the caper, even though most entertaining bits showcase the ensemble at their most not aware, as when Murphy tests his amateur cohorts by daring those to steal $50 cost of merchandise within the mall -- the scene that best fosters genuine identification using these buffoons. Through the heist itself, the suspense is palpable, if possibly because Christophe Beck's funky score blares its horns so insistently, one can't help but feel anxious. Nevertheless the laughs don't follow, wasting such set pieces as Broderick dangling within the bumper from the racecar suspended 50-odd tales above NY's annual Thanksgiving Day Parade without any madcap hilarity -- or gimme golden-parachute jokes -- they so highly deserve.Camera (color, widescreen), Dante Spinotti editor, Mark Helfrich music, Christophe Beck production designer, Kristi Zea art director, Nicholas Lundy set decorator, Diane Lederman costume designer, Sarah Edwards appear (Datasat/SDDS/Dolby Digital), Tod Maitland supervisory appear editor, Warren Shaw re-recording mixers, Michael Minkler, Tony Lamberti visual effects supervisor, Mark Russell visual effects, Method Art galleries, Phosphene, Large Film Design, Framestore stunt coordinator, Jery Hewitt assistant director, James M. James Mangold Compares The Wolverine to Chinatown and The Outlaw Josey Wales

James Mangold was just as apprehensive as the rest of you when the idea of a Wolverine movie fell into his lap — so much so that he spoke with predecessor Darren Aronofsky, who was originally set to direct, before taking on the project. So what enticed him to take the helm on the Hugh Jackman-starring X-Men spin-off, anyways? And how exactly will it evoke such American classics as Chinatown and Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales? From The Playlist: “I think part of the reason I’m doing this picture has been because it isn’t to me a conventional superhero movie. It isn’t an origin story, so I’m freed from that burden, and it also isn’t a save-the-world movie, which most of them are. It’s actually a character piece; I actually think it has more in common with The Outlaw Josey Wales and Chinatown, what we’re doing, than the conventional, ‘Will Wolverine and his compatriots save the world from this thermonuclear device’ question.” And further: “…The fact that half of the characters in this movie speak Japanese, this is like a foreign-language superhero movie that’s as much a drama and a detective story and a film noir, with high-octane action as it is anything like a conventional tentpole film.” So, Mangold’s Wolverine is an unconventional foreign language superhero detective noir-actioner character piece, set in Japan, with shades of Chinatown and The Outlaw Josey Wales. Gotcha. Another way to look at it: Wolverine will finally reunite the star and director of Kate & Leopold! Rejoice or lament as you will. The entire year of radical honours thinking

This seasons hopefuls funnel The Nobleman Speech for kudos inspiration. Variety's annual Honours Season Launch begins on-page 19 today, marking the state oncoming of kudos season (kinda/sorta/not necessarily -- individuals have been preparing campaigns for over a year, but we simply figured today was nearly as good a period every to acknowledge it really has started). To explain a Passover question: Why honours season not the same as other award seasons? The optimist within me states this may be -- ought to be -- annually of radical rethinking. In the last couple of years, there has been many key changes around the kudos scene, and also the mind of steam might just keep building. The pessimist states it will not be simple to alter the DNA. Causes of hope: Oscar has two times previously 3 years damaged its 66-year tradition of naming only five best picture nominees. Plus, the Governors Honours were spun off, the Oscarcast faster with a month, and it'll be moved even earlier. Plans are afoot for electronic voting. Streaming of films has become an issue as companies are thinking of getting options to screeners. Could this function as the year that honours voters think outdoors this area, retaining their "prestige" criteria but reinvigorating the "enjoyment" factor which has been dormant too lengthy? And may this function as the year that AMPAS board people and ABC executives finally consider major changes towards the show? The present format was spectacular if this first showed on television in 1953. But, uh, occasions have transformed. More is going to be stated on these subjects within the several weeks ahead. The numerous, many several weeks ahead. And, yes, I have only been speaking concerning the Academy awards, while you will find other honours occasions. Many, many, a number of other honours occasions. But Oscar may be the Alpha male in cuckoo kudosland, therefore if the Academy of movement Picture Arts & Sciences makes changes, everybody else will too. However, several things stay: the fascination with certain films, the hopes, the thrill which evolve into glassy-eyed numbness and verge-of-tears, wishing-it-will-finish-soon exhaustion. Reading through the tea leaves Each year, strategists attempt to develop an equation for achievement. However with secret ballots, experts are only able to make guesses, foreseeing the previous year's wins would be the Rosetta stone that opens all of the strategies of Academy voters' tastes. This past year, "The Social Networking" was winning everything until "King's Speech" won the SAG Honours and ongoing its unbroken streak towards the Oscar win. Consequently, many honours hopefuls this season works around the supposition that SAG is paramount which any film with Kleenex-y uplift includes a appealing factor. Although not so quick. Indication No. 1: Experts aren't people from the Academy and the other way around. Around commentators prefer to proclaim bellwethers, this can be a very inexact art. Indication No. 2: Tastes vary from year upon year. "LOTR: Return from the King" and "Slumdog Uniform" won top awards within the last decade with no single Oscar acting nomination. "Gladiator," "The Departed," "No Country for Old Males" and "The Hurt Locker" weren't exactly heartwarmers. The acting in most of those was superb but none of them was an "actors' movie." "The King's Speech" won since it was terrific. Also it was terrific cuz it had not been attempting to imitate every other movie and that is what voters react to. Rules of engagement There's another annual kudos tradition: Every season, the great old Academy attempts to get tough on campaigning. (The subject is addressed in additional depth on-page 19 by Variety's new and socko honours editor Christy Grosz.) The Academy is attempting to concurrently cope with reality and perception. Will we think people chosen for "King's Speech" simply because they got a totally free dinner at Chateau Marmont? AMPAS honchos realize that people election for his or her faves, however they reside in fear that writers and consumer-press commentators might say Academy awards could be "bought." Keep things in perspective Another annual tradition: The operation of honours season is going to be overanalyzed and mocked as though it's yet another illustration of Hollywood egos run amok. Essentially, it comes down to creativeness. But it is also be a time for marketing, networking and business, since some films and people are in position to increase earnings considerably. Ego stroke? This is a bonus. And also the season could be fun, if you are within the right mood. The only real question is how you can sustain that mood Therefore it is official! Honours season has started! Allow the games begin! And let us make certain that for the following couple of several weeks, all of us stop using a lot of exclamation points! Say Cheese! See Lindsay Lohan's New that has been enhanced Smile

Lindsay Lohan Lindsay Lohan displayed her new whitened teeth in the last weekend, just 2 days after drawing attention on her behalf apparently decaying teeth. "Thanks Dr. Dorfman for your zoom," the 25-year-old actress written underneath the picture of her teeth, which she released round the whosay site. "My nicotine nicotine gums are very sore though!" However, Lohan is probably not smiling for extended. She's a hearing Wednesday getting a La judge who could sentence her with a year . 5 in jail for smashing the regards to her probation.

Power Rangers Halloween Costumes Morph Into Lawsuit

This Halloween, the most legally hot costume might be a Power Rangers uniform. The company that owns the rights to the Power Rangers television series, brand and related products is suing a website that's selling the color-coded outfits. SCG Power Rangers LLC has filed a lawsuit against Underdog Endeavors, operators of MyPartyShirt.com, alleging that its Power Ranger costumes infringe copyrights and trademarks. The plaintiff says it sent the website several cease and desist letters about the sale of T-shirts in various Power Rangers colors, but to no avail. So now the company wants an injunction and further compensation. Can costumes be copyrighted? The fashion industry has lobbied extensively in recent years to expand copyright protection to clothing design, but for now, the Copyright Act doesn't permit a "useful article" such as clothing to be copyrighted, insofar as the item in question "has an intrinsic utilitarian function that is not merely to portray the appearance of the article or to convey information." However, the copyrighting of "pictorial, graphic, or sculptural" is permitted, which leads some attorneys to conclude that garments may include protected individual design elements. Does the following costume, taken from MyPartyShirt, denote some graphical originality? If so, maybe other Hollywood costume protectors will become litigious. According to a study of Google trends, some of the more popular Halloween costumes this season are costumes from Harry Potter, Captain America, and the Green Lantern. Obviously, if a costume is packaged or promoted using a trademarked name, that's actionable. And reproducing a copyrighted character (like with a Harry Potter or Green Lantern mask) likely would be a violation of derivative rights in a copyright. But what about costumes that merely look like famous characters? Also showing up on the list is a Nicki Minaj costume. We're still waiting for a celebrity to allege a publicity rights violation on a Halloween costume for sale in the marketplace. The closest recent lawsuit we've got to that -- a dispute involving an Albert Einstein costume -- was quietly settled on confidential terms earlier this year. Tony LaRussa Virtually Hated 'Moneyball'

Game 6 around the world Series was rained in St. Louis on Wednesday evening (it absolutely was rescheduled for Thursday evening), which gave Cardinals manager -- and not successful Bullpenfone user -- Tony LaRussa an chance to determine 'Moneyball.' Again. Since he left the first time. For non-baseball fans, LaRussa is not totally enamored with the idea of stats-over-scouts, nor while using concepts presented in Michael Lewis's famous book about Concord Athletics GM Billy Beane. That being: on-base percentage (the act of making base via walk or hit or hit-by-pitch) -- and little manager interference -- is the method to winning baseball games. Mentioned LaRussa to construct reporters on Wednesday: "On-base percentage is amongst the dangerous concepts in the last seven, eight years because it forces some professionals and coaches and players to think about that it's all about making base by drawing walks," La Russa mentioned. "The simple truth is the males that have the most effective on-base percentage are really dangerous gamers if he or she get yourself a help the zone. If a pitcher sees that, he produces the sides. Now you request , can they get a full pitch striking?Inch LaRussa -- who was simply the subject that belongs to them hero-worship book by Buzz Bissinger referred to as 'Three Nights in August' -- apparently walked in the Kaira Pitt-introduced Oscar contender the first time he first seen it just like a tribute to "the scouts and baseball individuals who were dissed" with the film. When he first seen it again on Wednesday evening, LaRussa didn't be thankful anymore. He was "upset with what it represented," but did concede the film version of 'Moneyball' featured "good acting." For Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington -- who appears inside the film since he was the A's third base and infield coach until 2006 -- his review was more kind. "In my opinion it absolutely was a great movie of a manager hamstrung to date as dollars go. I am aware this didn't mention [A's All-Star 3B Eric] Chavez, [2002 MVP Miguel] Tejada, [Tim] Hudson, [Craig] Zito and [Mark] Mulder. I loved the film,Inch Washington mentioned. "And i am a large fan of Billy Beane's. He provided an chance to become coach. In my opinion got this opportunity in Texas because of Beane's review. After I have always mentioned, items you accomplish around arises from others stretching a hands that may help you.In . LaRussa has won two World Series game game titles -Body with Concord, pre-Beane, then one with St. Louis in 2006. Trailing 3-2 in the most effective of seven series, the Cardinals will endeavour later on from behind to supply LaRussa title No. 3 beginning tonight. Mattel Buys A $680M Ticket For Thomas

U.S. toy manufacturer Mattel has bought HIT Entertainment, your debt-laden United kingdom kids toy certification company behind Thomas the Tank Engine, for $680 million in cash. Thats around $20 million under owner Apax Partners had wanted for this, I realize, and around $200 million lacking the $890 million which Apax taken care of the organization in 2005. The offer gives Mattel a foothold within the television business because the Thomas & Buddies Television show airs in additional than 20 languages worldwide. Rival toy maker Hasbro already features its own production/distribution arm, Hasbro Galleries, and is the owner of partnership kids network The Hub with Discovery Communications. Because of the tight rules regulating toy producers making Television shows in Europe, it remains to appear how Mattel will fare whether it pitches new programmes which consists of toys to public tv stations. The offer sees Thomas the Tank Engine joining other Mattel brands including Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels. I realize that Mattel initially wanted to strip out Thomas in the relaxation of HITs qualities — Thomas makes up about 80% of HITs revenues but ultimately required the whole HIT Entertainment range, including Barney the Dinosaur, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina and Pingu. Saban Brands, Disney and Mattel rival Tomy all vied to purchase HIT Entertainment, but Mattel won out eventually. The $680 million deal has been funded through a combination of cash and debt and it is likely to near the coast the very first quarter of 2012. The cost translates to some multiple of nearly 10 occasions earnings. This morning announcement doesn't include HIT Entertainments 30% stake in U.S. kids cable/satellite funnel Sprout. Im told that NBC Universal is making noises about purchasing out co-proprietors Sesame Workshop and PBS, and that's why Apax Partners really wants to hang onto it. A number of other United kingdom kids TV certification companies though are presently looking at the naughty step. Coolabi, which distributes classic Brit TV cartoons including Ivor the Engine and Bagpuss, has lost money each year within the last decade. Chorion, which this past year wished to buy HIT Entertainment itself, has been split up after it breached its lending covenants in March and was not able to satisfy interest obligations on its $112 million bank debt. Experts have blamed vc's for example Apax Partners themselves for that mess these kids TV companies have been in. Private equity finance traders are extremely concentrated on short-term cash generation, states one kids TV producer, they don't purchase new programming to help keep these kids brands fresh: Which was the problem with Apax once they bought HIT Entertainment in 2005. They desired to double their cash in three years, nevertheless its taken them 6 years to get away from the company. Throughout that point they didnt wish to develop new shows. Private equity investors don't have time horizon the kids TV small business. Mattel, making many Thomas toys under license from HIT, was already creating a Thomas the Tank Engine live action theatrical film, directed by Shane Acker (9). The Mattel entertainment qualities design team continues to be focusing on the film with HIT and Peter Jacksons Nz-based Weta Workshop. Cinetic Media and also the UTA Independent Film Group are handling financing and distribution.

The Storyline To Date: The 'Paranormal Activity' Franchise

This Friday, the 'Paranormal Activity' franchise continues when 'Paranormal Activity 3' will get launched into theaters. The prior films within the series have made over $370 million worldwide, but when you have not seen them and therefore are hankering to look at part three -- or maybe you've ignored a few of the 'PA' mythology -- have no fear! Moviefone is here now having a not-so-frightening quick studies into the field of 'Paranormal Activity' -- and also you don't even require a VCR to take a look. It's understandable, but every spoiler imaginable is ahead. Principal Figures Katie &bull Stars in: 'Paranormal Activity' (cameo in 'Paranormal Activity 2') &bull She's: A lady that has been haunted by an evil spirit since she would be a child thinks the spirit has traveled towards the house she just moved into together with her boyfriend, Micah. Kristi &bull Stars in: 'Paranormal Activity 2' &bull She's: Katie's sister. She's been haunted through the same spirit now thinks it's in your home she presently lives along with her husband, boy and step-daughter. Micah &bull Stars in: 'Paranormal Activity' (cameo in 'Paranormal Activity 2') &bull He's: Katie's boyfriend. Unwillingly concurs to setup camcorders in the home after strange things begin happening. Daniel &bull Stars in: 'Paranormal Activity 2' &bull He's: Kristi's husband. Creates home security system within their home after an apparent burglary. Also not wanting to believe his wife, or daughter, concerning the spirit. Ali &bull Stars in: 'Paranormal Activity 2' &bull She's: Dan's daughter and Kristi's step-daughter. Starts researching spirits/ghosts/devils after listening to Katie and Kristi being haunted by one ever since they were kids. Hunter &bull Stars in: 'Paranormal Activity 2' &bull He's: Serta and Kristi's infant boy. The spirit seems to be really thinking about Hunter, as the majority of the inexplicable phenomenon in the home happens around him. What went down in 'Paranormal Activity' Katie and her boyfriend Micah have just moved right into a new house regrettably, strange everything has began happening throughout the house. Katie informs Micah that maybe it's a ghost which has been haunting her since she would be a kid. She employs a psychic who notifies the pair the haunting is really the job of the demon which they ought to employ a demonologist. Micah, being the compassionate boyfriend he's, pokes fun at Katie and refuses to usher in the demonologist. (Almost always there is one idiot inside a horror film who will not admit the apparent). However, he concurs to setup a camera to ascertain if they are able to catch this so-known as demon for action. After several inexplicable occurrences -- the bed room door slamming, hearing actions downstairs -- Micah sprinkles talcum powder through the mattress and through the hallway. The 2 awaken later and discover foot prints prior to the loft. When Micah increases in to the loft, he finds out a burnt an image of Katie growing up. Katie then states that after she was youthful, there is an inexplicable fire at her home. The photograph which was based in the loft was regarded as destroyed. The film finishes a couple of nights later, when Micah is awoken with a screaming Katie. He runs downstairs, where there's another noisy noise. We soon hear someone gradually walking in the stairs. Micah's dead is tossed in the camcorder within the bed room. Katie, who's covered in bloodstream and likely possessed through the demon, walks to your camera and smiles. What went down in 'Paranormal Activity 2' This movie is basically a prequel, with a lot of the plot occurring prior to the occurrences in the first film. It begins having a husband and wife, Kristi and Serta, finding their property completely destroyed with a potential thief. The only real factor which was untouched was their infant boy Hunter's room. The house invasion causes Serta to setup a burglar system with surveillance cameras. Katie and Micah (just before the occasions in 'Paranormal Activity') go to the couple's home. After Kristi and Katie admit that they have been suffering from a spirit ever since they were little, Dan's daughter (and Kristi's step-daughter) Ali starts looking into devils. She finds out that the only method to eliminate a demon would be to sacrifice the very first male child (a.k.a. Hunter) in Kristi and Katie's family. This is when a great deal of crazy begins to happen: your dog suffers a seizure, the pool cleaner increases from the pool by itself, Hunter will get moved round his crib during the night. One evening, while Ali and Serta are out, Kristi is pulled from Hunter's room and in to the basement. The following day, Ali finds scratches around the basement door. She watches the surveillance video and sees the footage of Kristi being pulled by a hidden pressure. At this time, Serta decides to complete the only real factor he is able to: pass the demon onto another member of the family. He selects Kristi's sister, Katie. That evening, Serta is assaulted by Kristi. He presses a mix to her temple after which burns a photograph of the youthful Katie -- exactly the same photo that Micah and Katie uncover within the first film -- basically "treating" Kristi from the evil spirit. Three days later, we have seen Katie at Kristi's house. Kristi doesn't have recollection from the last couple of days. Katie, however, states that strange everything has been happening at her home. The film jumps ahead again, this time around towards the evening Micah was wiped out. Katie, covered in Micah's bloodstream, turns up at Kristi and Dan's home. She sneaks up behind Serta and breaks his neck. She then walks as much as Hunter's room and throws Kristi from the camera, killing her. Katie then accumulates Hunter and walks out. The subtitles around the final frame condition that Katie and Hunter's location are presently unknown. What don't be surprised from 'Paranormal Activity 3' 'Paranormal Activity 3' will occur in 1988, with Katie and Kristi as children. We assume this film will ultimately reveal the foundation from the demon which has been haunting them. There'll also be a scene showing the fireplace that Katie alludes to within the first movie. Based on overview of the film on HitFix, the adult Kristi and Katie can look within the first couple of minutes of 'Paranormal Activity 3.' Now Lionsgate Adds More Marketing Help

Lionsgate Hiring Help On Distribution Side Lionsgate is now taking the second stepof Hollywood rehab: not just recognizing it has a problem but hiring even moreexecutivesto fix it.The studio has brought in marketing guru Terry Press just a day afteradding former Disney exec Chris LeRoy as an in-house consultant on the distribution side.Press is reporting to Lionsgate President of Marketing exec Tim Palen. I said it before but it’s worth repeating: 2011 has been a disaster for Lionsgate which must get ready for 2012 when potential blockbusters like The Hunger Games debut. But as good as Press and LeRoy are, they cant make miracles if the product stinks. I truly hope the good buzz surrounding Hunger Games from the bestselling book trilogy bears fruit for itsplanned film franchise. Press, of course, worked forWalt Disney Studios and then DreamWorksbefore going out on her own. She’s a consultant to down-but-not-out CBS Films which is changing its business model. And she was working closelywith Scott Rudin as an adviser.Emphasis on the word ‘was’. Rudin has a long and unfortunate history of bad behavior to those close to him:he wassomiserableto Press during the tail-end of the Oscar marketing campaign for The Social Network and the beginning of the one for this year’sThe Girl With The Dragon Tattoo that they’verecently andquietly parted company, according to my Sony sources. So, from my view, evenworking for Lionsgate right now is better than working for Rudin.

Chaz Bono Says Mom Cher was 'Really Proud' to be in 'Dancing With the Stars' Audience

ABC Moments before the broadcast, even those closest to the show weren't sure if Cher would be in attendance for the Oct. 10 taping of Dancing With the Stars. PHOTOS: 'Dancing With the Stars' Season 13: Rehearsals But the 65-year-old singer made good on her promise, sealed with a tweet, to come support son Chaz Bono in the audience during week 4. And she sure picked a good night. Bono made his strongest Season 13 showing yet, earning a cumulative score of 21 for his and partner Lacey Schwimmer's pasodoble. "From early in the week when we started on it, it just felt like, for me, the right dance," Bono told press, including The Hollywood Reporter, backstage after his performance. "This one really made sense in my brain and in my body." PHOTOS: 'Dancing With the Stars' Season 13 Cast Official Photos So what did he think of all the support? Well, Chaz didn't really notice at the time. "I don't really look at the audience until after when we're getting the score," he admits. "I know my mom was really proud of me, and that was awesome. I'm glad that whatever we're doing is touching people." In addition to Cher, Bono's stepmother, Mary Bono Mack, grandmother, brother, aunt and uncle also turned out to show their support. "Last week was a hard week, and everybody knew that I was kind of feeling bad about it," he says of his low standing on the leader board, "so to come back and have my whole family there was amazing." The performance, choreographed to the theme from Rocky, also gave Bono a boost of confidence. "When I was a kid, I saw Rocky, and it was my favorite movie," says Bono. "I wanted to be Rocky. Doing it to that song probably would have meant more to me than any movie theme." His pasodoble culminated in a Rocky-esque run to the top of the ballroom studio stairs, which had Schwimmer nervous about her partner's recently ailing knees and ankles. But Bono says he's on the mend, placing physical state at about "75 percent" right now. "Going upstairs actually feels pretty good," he says. "Going downstairs is a little challenging on my body right now." Chaz Bono Cher Dancing with the Stars

Is 'Real Steel' the very best Bad Movie You Can Observe This Season? (And 24 Other Urgent Questions)

'Real Steel,' a film about robots that box, opens today in a theater in your area. The-popular Hugh Jackman stars, there is however a catch: To look at 'Real Steel', a pre-set quantity of your nation's legal tender must be exchanged having a associated with the local theater for admittance. Legal tender which was gained, probably, in a place you don't enjoy investing time. Are you going to enjoy investing time watching 'Real Steel'? Like a service, here's a solution for each question you could possibly have about 'Real Steel.' Q: Is 'Real Steel' a great movie? A: No. Q: Am I Going To leave 'Real Steel' inside a good mood? A: If you're able to work through because you just viewed a film that wasn't excellent, yes. Q: What's 'Real Steel' about? A: As pointed out within the introduction, it comes down to boxing robots. I am unsure what else you will need to know. That either you like or it does not. Q: So why do the robots fight? Perform the robots nothing like one another? A: The robots aren't sentient (a minimum of, I do not think they're -- there is a type of confusing subplot relating to this possibility that will get dropped fairly rapidly) so that they don't speak, and there's no known bitterness between your robots. Q: Why would Hugh Jackman have a role where he does not speak? A: Hugh Jackman plays an individual named Charlie, not really a robot. Q: I see. So 'Real Steel' leaves the chance that Charlie is really a robot open ended? As with 'Blade Runner'? A: Oh, guy, this won't become your kind of movie. Q: When the robots aren't sentient, what makes them fighting? A: Controlled remotely by humans, the robots fight for sport before a crowd. Q: Why would people pay to determine this? A: Well, Hugh Jackman includes a pretty strong following and appears just like a nice enough guy. I am talking about, his Wolverine movie wasn't excellent, but he still provides extensive good will remaining in the X-Males movies, so... Q: No, why would anybody pay to determine robots box within the setting of the movie? A: Oh. Because 'Real Steel' happens within the somewhat not too distant future when human boxing has been suspended. To exchange human boxing (came from here on just known to as "boxing"), robot boxing was invented. Q: Nobody really watches boxing today for an array of reasons, why would a whole new industry have to be produced to exchange something very couple of people still worry about? A: Nobody really requested another Ryan Gosling movie to become launched inside a three-month time period either, but that now is available too. Q: Talking about 'The Ides of March,' are you going to repost that picture of the friend who appears like Ryan Gosling's mask in 'Drive' for not one other reason than spite? A: Yes. Q: The number of occasions within this publish perhaps you have incorrectly typed 'Real Steel' as some variation of 'Reel Steal' or 'Real Steal'? A: Seven. Q: Seriously, what is the plot of the movie? A: Charlie (Jackman) is really a lower-on-his-luck former boxer who is the owner of a robot named Ambush. Charlie receives observe that his ex-girlfriend has died. Charlie sired a young child (Dakota Goyo) with this particular ex-girlfriend and needs to appear for any custody of the children hearing. Charlie's ex-female friends wealthy sister, Debra (Hope Davis), want to have custody of the children. Q: Does Charlie's robot fight with Debra's robot using the champion attaining custody of the children of Charlie's boy? A: No. Charlie really does not even want custody of the children. Q: How come figures in movies given such impractical names like "Dakota"? A: Really, this is the actor's real title. Within the movie he plays "Max." Q: Has anybody on the planet been born following the year 1995 using the title "Matt," "Jack," or "Steve"? A: No. Q: Wait, within the trailer that Charlie and Max spend a while together. How did Charlie gain custody of the children when he did not want custody of the children? A: Charlie realizes he can produce a couple of dollars from his ex-girlfriend's wealthy family. He receives $50,000 using the caveat he will need to take Max for that summer time because Debra and her husband are likely to Tuscany. Q: Wait, what? So how exactly does which make sense whatsoever? A: It seems sensible as this scene was probably written on the Friday after 5 p.m. Q: So Charlie and Max bond over their fascination with Ambush? A: No, poor Ambush will get destroyed pretty at the start of the film. Then Charlie purchases another robot named Noisy Boy, but that robot will get destroyed, too. Then Charlie and Max find a mature robot named Atom, who they bond over and love. Q: Wait, so Atom is Charlie's third robot within this movie? Why would I worry about his third robot any longer than his 1st or 2nd robot? A: Since the musical score increases more frequently when Atom is on screen of computer did for Ambush or Noisy Boy. Q: Could it be true Evangeline Lilly is within 'Real Steal'? A: Yes. Though, within the other half from the movie she's virtually controlled towards the role of "robot boxing spectator." To the stage it felt like director Shawn Levy just put her inside a room and stated, "OK, Evangeline, we want 18 different shots individuals searching happy about something which just happened within the robot boxing match. Only then do we will require 18 much more of you searching concerned or forlorn about something which just happened within the robot boxing match. I'll let it rest your decision if you would rather go more 'concerned' or even more 'forlorn.'" Q: Is 'Real Steel' the very best movie ever about robot boxing? A: Automatically, 'Real Steel' is the greatest movie ever about robot boxing. Q: If you are likely to be blurbed within this weekend's advertisements for 'Real Steel,' what quote do you consider is going to be used? A: 'Real Steel' is the greatest movie ever!" Mike Ryan, Moviefone Q: Must I see 'Real Steel'? A: Right? (shrugs) Q: Is the fact that an endorsement? A: Kind of. Again, 'Real Steel' won't in anyway be mistaken with a film that's good. But, for reasons uknown, Used to do leave the theater happy. Though, those who have had lobotomies sometimes appear more happy next procedure, too. 1911: Film Review

HONG KONG -- Flouting Chairman Mao's remark that "Revolution is not taking people out to dinner," gate crashing and dinner parties take up more screen time than grisly battles and nation building in 1911. Jackie Chan stars and co-directs this historical epic with Zhang Li to commemorate the centennial of the Xinhai Revolution, which ended two centuries of the monarchial system in China. However, Chan has not injected any of his playful charm or physical virtuosity into Wang Xingdong's and Chen Baoguang's insipid, poorly structured screenplay.our editor recommends'1911': Jackie Chan Takes Serious Turn in First Trailer (Video)Day-and-Date Release Planned in U.S., China for Jackie Chan's '1911' (Berlin) A mainland Chinese propaganda vehicle through and through, the film postulates history in such a scrappy, inaccessible manner that either as entertainment or education, it's a lost cause. Initial domestic response is not particularly zealous. Overseas release including a U.S. bow will only pique specialist and academic curiosity. Chan's usual fan base may give this one a pass despite the astonishing fact that this is his 100th film as an actor. 1911 chronicles the political careers of China's first president Sun Yat Sen (Winston Chao) and military commander Huang Xing (Chan) as parallel trajectories that embody the two-pronged offensives of the revolution. Sun is the diplomat and statesman spearheading overseas fund-raising efforts and navigating a complex web of western imperialist interests, while Huang gets his hands dirty (and his fingers blown off) in bloody warfare. However, their relationship never delves into personal depths or illuminates how it shaped the country's destiny. They seldom even appear in the same scene. Two battles are represented as the turning points in their struggle: the failed third Guangzhou Uprising on April 23, 1911 and the Wuchang Uprising on October 10, 1911 which motivated 14 provinces to declare independence from the reigning Qing court. The action devised by Chan's own stunt team is run-of-the-mill and episodic with no forward momentum. The truncated narrative and rushed editing give the dubious impression that the revolutionaries lose battle after battle without putting their strategic position (namely that they were extremely outnumbered and short of ammunition) in context. Chao, who's played Sun numerous times since The Song Sisters (1997), practically inhabits the role, infusing the film with a dignified presence. However, this cannot alleviate the stodgy dialogue he's given, which sounds like reams of political treatises, or the gauche behavior the script assigns him, like making a facile analogy between western imperialist expansionism and a lamb chop. Screenwriters Wang and Chen, who penned the blockbuster epics The Founding of a Republic and Beginning of the Great Revival, recycle the same formula of making 1911 a vehicle for star-studded cameos. However, stars in 1911 are less numerous and luminous. The gimmick is wearing thin anyway. Historical accounts of the protagonists' real lives rock with adventure and romance. The screenplay fails to take advantage of their potential for entertainment. The dearth of background or anecdotal information in characterization is signaled in the prologue execution of Qiu Jin (Ning Jing) without relating to her background as a political visionary and proto-feminist. Huang was a military genius, who held up 20,000-strong Qing troop for a month with 200 men in the Guangxi uprising in 1908. Chan just bounces around the warzone like a cheerleader with daft exhortations like "your safety comes first!" By comparison, ambitious General Yuan Shikai emerges as the most formidable character as the film devotes more time to reveal how he plays the court and the Republican government against each other. His devious intimidation of Empress Dowager Longyu (Joan Chen hamming up a prima donna act) provides rare moments of dramatic tension. The film's only romantic interest -- between Huang and his wife Xu Zonghan (Li Bingbing) completely skims over the process of how their paper wedding blossoms into real love, reducing emotions to a few disconnected reaction shots of Xu frowning or fretting. In the same neglectful way, scholar-martyr Lin Juemin's (He Ge) celebrated letter (now part of Chinese school curricula) to his wife Chen Yiying is never quoted once, nor have they created a moving episode out of their love. Instead, stylized shots of him frolicking on Penang beach like a Club Med commercial are inserted into totally incongruous scenes over and over. The technical package is visibly expensive, but skilled cinematography aside its production design does not create particularly stylish period atmospherics. Sets of U.S. or European backdrops look especially overwrought and faux. Nonetheless, daily usage has dipped since the announcement, possibly simply due to the phenomenon we're calling " Dissed Connections." Clearly, this chart shows a sizable spike soon after the announcement, but more to the stage, its new baseline appears greater laptop or computer was before. Like other music services including MOG, Rdio, and Slacker, Spotify now adds your listening activity for the pals' Facebook feeds, to enable them to give consideration to and discuss your tunes (unless of course obviously you don't wish it to). Searching back, this came as not surprising, because the first time I met Daniel Ek, each morning in NY within this summer time 2009, he described he didn't picture Spotify just like a music social media -- rather, he mentioned, he'd rather let someone else build the social media. That a person switched to become Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook integration seems being working well for Spotify based on its September amounts. Whether it could keep that in the following month is an additional story -- and where we're sitting, largely would depend on whether Spotify can convince people to make use of its approaching Private Listening feature after they don't desire to share, rather than disconnecting Spotify from Facebook permanently. The Playboy Club Boss on the Difference Between Bunnies and Playmates

Amber Heard and Laura Benanti The main thing that Chad Hodge wants you to know about his upcoming NBC series The Playboy Club is that it's not about the centerfolds. When Hodge, who last created The CW drama Runaway, was first approached by the studio to do a show about Hugh Hefner's famous Playboy Bunnies, his reaction was, "Is this going to be a scripted version of The Girls Next Door? No, thank you." But that was before he knew about the rather significant difference between Bunnies and the Playmates. Hef's Bunnies worked at his chain of nightclubs, the first of which opened in Chicago in 1960 and where membership was a status symbol. Bunnies - primarily waitresses and cigarette hawkers - were not allowed to date patrons, known as "keyholders," who in turn were not allowed to touch the Bunnies. Playmates were those who modeled, often nude, for Playboy magazine. Fall TV: Get the lowdown on this season's must-see new shows Hodge wanted to create a dark twisty soap about the world of the Bunnies - and the men and mobsters who adored them. "I want this to be the thing that you come home drunk, sit on your couch, look at your DVR list and it's the first thing you want to watch. That was my mission." But his first job has been explaining - and re-explaining - that the show is not about the centerfolds. "There's a certain controversy that naturally swirls around our show because people's feelings about Playboy, the company and the name itself," he said. It's a brand that has drawn early ire from the Parents Television Council and caused at least one NBC affiliate to refuse to air it. Over the summer, Hodge emphasized to reporters at the network's fall preview session that the show, in fact, displayed a certain kind of female empowerment for its era. "I understand why people question that, but really what this show is, above all, is a sexy, fun soap with crime, with music, with love stories and love triangles," he said. "It's really, really fun." The Playboy Club's Amber Heard is one of TVGuide.com's stars to watch this year TVGuide.com spoke with Hodge about the research that went into creating The Playboy Club, the show's troubled protagonist Maureen (Amber Heard), and the story behind the club's closeted lesbian Bunny. What research did you do for The Playboy Club? Hodge: I didn't know a ton about it. My first stop was the Playboy Mansion and I went up to the archives in Hef's mansion. He has over 2,500 scrapbooks that are maintained. As soon as I learned about the history of the club, the Bunnies and what the Chicago Playboy Club was like and what these stories could be, and I talked to former Bunnies, I was totally excited. I thought it should be a network show, in fact. If it was something about Playboy Magazine and we were telling a story about centerfolds, that's a different story. Most people don't know that the Playboy Bunnies had virtually nothing to do with Playboy magazine and being a centerfold. Bunnies were waitresses in bathing suits. What's the coolest thing you found in the Playboy archives? Hodge: When Hef was 14 or 15, he started keeping a journal of his life except it wasn't a normal journal like you think of. It was a cartoon comic strip of himself. So if he got into a fight with his mother that day, he would detail the fight in the comics. It was hilarious. He would write it out like a comic book and draw all the pictures. He did that for several years about his friends, his school, his parents. It really inspired much of the series. Hef's voiceover, the idea of the omniscient narrator and Hef creating this world and creating our story sort of came from that. Though the series is an ensemble, Maureen is our eyes into the club. Tell us about her. Hodge: We're coming in with her and she wants to be a star. She comes from somewhere else and is seeing this for the first time - and then this horrible thing happens to her within the first three minutes of the show. Suddenly we're off and running and Maureen is at the center of that story. I didn't want her to be the doe-eyed optimist or the girl who fell off the turnip truck, I wanted her to be damaged and troubled. I wanted her to feel like she's lived nine lives. Stuff has happened to her and you'll find out what that is in the series. She comes here with a lot of baggage. Check out our fall preview for galleries, scoop, premiere calendars and more! Because of that horrible thing that happens, she gets involved with key holder Nick Dalton (Eddie Cibrian). What can you say about where she's headed? Hodge: When she thinks that Nick isn't adequately covering up what happened, she'll go on her own and take care of things. She develops a relationship with the mob, who are the very people who are after her. She keeps them close. You introduce this underground society of homosexuals, The Mattachine Society, in the pilot. Is that something that came up in your research? Hodge: Most gay history you hear about starts at Stonewall, but this is way before that. [The Mattachine Society] started, in fact, in the late '50s and into the '60s, and chapters sprouted up in all cities across the country. This is about the Chicago chapter ... I didn't include it because I necessarily felt a need to make a statement in any way. History comes into play in many ways through this show, but it's always through character. I knew that I wanted this one specific character to be a closeted lesbian who was in a marriage, a lavender marriage, which is a marriage of convenience where a gay woman and a gay man are married as a cover. ... But like I said before, this show is fun and entertaining and about our characters, so the story line isn't driven by the history so much as the people in the world. The Playboy Club premieres Monday at 10/9c on NBC.
