Japanese formatters throw world pitch
TOKYO -- With the local TV market suffering a bit from stagnation, a Japanese TV industry org is working to enable producers to take their formats and nonfiction shows on the road.The Assn. of All Japan TV Program Companies is hosting the Tokyo TV Forum, it's first international pitching event, today through Wednesday in Tokyo. A total of 20 commissioning editors and other pros from around the world will hear pitches on 21 docu projects from Japan during the three-day event. Top projects will gain entry to the Asian Side of the Doc pitch event in March.The 21 pitches were selected from nearly 60 submitted by production houses nationwide. Among the panelists being pitched are reps from BBC, PBS Distribution, CCTV, KBS, TFI, NDR/ARD, Arte France and Discovery Networks Asia Pacific.The forum also will feature panel sessions and workshops designed to give Japanese producers deeper insights into international TV markets. Among the presenters are Yutaka Shigenobu, CEO of major Japanese production house TV Man Union; Minoru Toizumi, prexy of Hokkaido Television Broadcasting; Hiroshi Takahashi, prexy of Toei Animation; and Akihiro Arai, a senior director at Fuji Television Network, one of Japan's five commercial networks.Japanese broadcasters have long sold their formats and shows abroad, with TBS' popular obstacle course show "Sasuke" airing on G4 as "American Ninja Warrior" (with the show's finale airing on sister network NBC). Forum director Yukihiko Amagi sees the event as a chance to better connect Japanese producers with international players."The TTVF is a great chance for international markets to see the best of what Japanese documentary makers have to offer," Amagi said. "And it's a great opportunity for Japanese documentary producers to get up to speed on international co-production, have their proposals reviewed by international experts, and learn the steps to signing a co-production deal." Adelaide fest selects new topper
SYDNEY -- Amanda Duthie, topper of arts and entertainment at pubcaster the ABC, has been tapped as topper of the Adelaide Film Festival.Duthie takes over from Katrina Sedgwick, who stepped down after a nine-year stint at the fest at the end of the 2011 edition.Duthie says she is not concerned that most of her experience is on the smallscreen, especially as some of her TV slate has appeared at the fest in the past."I think the walls are coming down between cinema and television and galleries and phones even in terms of the work we are all looking towards and commissioning," she told Daily Variety. The Adelaide fest is a biennale with the next installment due Oct. 10-20, 2013, and Duthie says she will look "about 12 months out" for programming to fill the fest.Exec will also help steer the fest's Investment Fund, a $1 million pot of coin distributed every two years. Fund had success in 2009 when it backed Warwick Thornton's indigenous drama, "Samson and Delilah," which won the Camera d'Or at Cannes and was Australia's entry in the foreign language Oscar category. More recently, the fund backed helmer Justin Kurzel's serial killer drama, "Snowtown," that was selected for Cannes this year."The fund has enabled some truly amazing work and we want to continue that," she said. Report: Dancing's Karina Smirnoff, Brad Penny End Engagement
Karina Smirnoff and Brad Penny Dancing with the Stars champ Karina Smirnoff and her fiancé, major league pitcher Brad Penny, have split, Us Weekly reports.The pair, both 33, had postponed their wedding (set for January 2012) in October and were still together at the time, but had conflicting schedules, a source tells the magazine.
